Welcome everyone to the newly established Bren:Alumni blog! My name is Daniel and I’ll be a regular poster on this blog.

First off, a little background information about myself. I graduated from ICS in 2003 and then started 5 long months of post grad depression. What is post grad depression you ask? It is when you finish a 4 year degree and then can’t get a job. Fortunately for the later half of 2003 the job market started to pick up and I landed my first job at a defense firm.

After 3 great years working at the defense firm, I decided to quit and do something stupid and crazy which is trying to do your own dot com startup. It is something a lot of software people dream of doing, but many people don’t do for reasons of financial security, personal risk profile, and unfamiliarity with the terrain. They’ll definitely be some posts about this in the future.

The reason why I am posting on this blog is I sincerely believe in the power of networking within the ICS alumni. And one thing that makes networking easier is having a common bond. You may ask, what is our common bond? My answer would be … suffering. If you stop and think about it, those of us who have graduated from ICS have suffered through countless late night labs, studying about how to shift bits around in a given word, doing enough math classes where you could declare a minor, screaming about lisp or prolog.. etc.

With networking comes sharing your experiences and potentially helping out your fellow alum. There is a preconceived notion that you have to be an older mentor in order to share experiences. And although that helps out, it is not a pre-requisite.

What I would like to do in this blog is to do just that. Share my experiences. Hopefully some of you reading this blog may go through the same situations in life and hopefully maybe make a better decision when I went through a particular experience.

To give a preview of what I’ll be talking about in the future, the topics will be: mentoring, what it is like to work in a big company, ‘process.. is it useful’, is Ruby on Rails hype?, stop thinking like an engineer, how to get rich from the king of Nigeria, and career growth.

So alas, I have to do some coding now and try to avoid going on Youtube to get some work done. Given that, welcome!
