First off.. start by reading this..
http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2007/06/21/bloomberg-to-grads-never-leave-the-office/
It is a short article.. but also read the comments on the bottom.
Wow.. first of all.. I have to say you will agree or disagree on this article depending on your values. Major Bloomberg’s values evidently are moving ahead and life, and not really have a good work life balance. For anyone who wants to enjoy life, I think this article goes too far to the extreme.
In my opinion, to move ahead in business, you have to do two things.. ‘work smart’ and ‘work hard’. Working smart refers to not just blindly putting in 60 hours a week instead of 40, but to work in a way cogniscient of your career path. I’ll take a coders example.
Say you code. And you are a pretty darn good coder. You put in 40 - 50 hours a week and you just stay in your cube and code. Take another guy who codes 35 hours a week. But instead he uses an extra 10 hours to network, and works on his public image.
Hate to say it.. but the guy who worked smarter is going to get ahead of the guy who just put in a lot of hours.
