Michael Carey

Michael Carey is internationally recognized as a leader in database research.

The 2008-2009 Department of Computer Science Distinguished Speaker Seminar Series kicked off on Friday, September 26 with an overview lecture of XQuery language by Michael Carey, Donald Bren Professor in Information and Computer Sciences.

The Distinguished Speaker Seminar Series is held every Friday from 11 a.m. to noon during the 2008-2009 academic year. Admission is free and a listing of upcoming speakers and topics is available at the seminar series web site.

Carey’s talk provided a technical overview of the XQuery language, showing how (and why!) it has been successfully used in enterprise infrastructure software such as message-oriented middleware and data integration systems, outlined some of the XQuery extensions that are currently in flight, and highlighted several of the interesting open research opportunities related to XQuery and related XML-based technologies.

Carey’s lecture has been made available online in both Flash and iPod video format (mp4).

Prior to his reentry to academia, Carey was a Senior Engineering Director on the AquaLogic side of BEA Sytems, Inc. (and an Architect at Oracle Corporation following their BEA acquisition). Carey managed the BEA XQuery engineering team and was chief architect for BEA’s AquaLogic Data Services Platform product.
